The French Alps are particularly appreciated for the outdoor sports activities which they allow to practice, in the first place skiing in winter and hikes of all kinds in summer, but also activities whose practice is not as developed for the general public such as climbing, high mountains, mountain biking, rafting, canyoning, hang gliding and paragliding.
The French Alps are also famous for the beauty of the sites combining high peaks and valley lakes and altitude lakes.
The French Alps are part of the main mountain range of Western Europe also extending over Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Slovenia and Liechtenstein.

The French Alps are home to important tourist resorts, including Chamonix and St. Gervais at the foot of Mont Blanc, Albertville, which hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics, Grenoble, which hosted the 1968 Winter Olympics, Annecy with its old town and lake, Briançon with its citadel further south, and many others.
